Discussions of building infrastructure have turned increasingly toward PoE as the fourth utility, providing the necessary data to a wide range of devices that increase the connectivity of the building as a whole. Examples of devices that PoE can power in educational facilities include:

• Security cameras and public speaker systems
• Smartboards
• Smart lighting systems
• HVAC controls
• Wireless access points for improved WiFi
• And more

It’s difficult to calculate the exact cost savings of implementing PoE because so much of it depends on the type and number of devices this new opportunity covers. In addition, indirect cost savings such as more efficient lighting also have to be taken into account. However, in almost every application, the cost savings of PoE solutions in education are significant.

PoE reaches its limitations when power and data have to be delivered at distances above 100 meters, or 328 feet. This can make bringing service to both remote buildings or hallways more difficult. In addition, a PoE cable is more robust and expensive than a simple power cable, making installation cost-prohibitive in applications where the data component is not needed.

PoE provides energy efficiency by reducing the need to install AC wiring and outlets. Devices that rely on Ethernet cords to supply the data directly will always need to be connected. Adding power to that connection can deliver a savings of nearly 50%. The PoE-based installation of smart lighting and HVAC systems that can turn on and off based on need and usage can further reduce energy usage.
